Community

Curiously, in our modern culture, most of our food scraps are thrown in trash bins and buried it in the landfill. Yet, food and yard scraps have always been the most valuable resource for creating healthy, vibrant soils for our gardens, growing food, reducing greenhouse gasses and reducing that waste sent to our landfills. Local composting options are still limited and do not serve everyone, but they could and should.

Food scraps are an item for the recycling system. Unlike other recycling streams where local reprocessing for metals and plastics isn’t an option, all the resources needed to compost food scraps are available, locally. Communities can hold the power to decide how their food scraps are managed, and we think most people would prefer their food scraps be composted locally and used to improve local soils, first.

Community Composting consolidates organic materials at a local site, such as a community compost facility, a community garden, an urban farm or a school; community composting can be distributed across multiple backyards, where the composting process is managed in smaller volumes, as more hands make for less work.

Coupled to a delocalized network of Composting Hubs, Drop-Off Depots, and Local Pickup Services, Community Composting promises to be the most effective solution to wasted food previously buried in our landfills, and it offers the greatest return to the community for healthy living.

The impact of Community Composting can be substantial. At our Earth Appliance Organics Compost Facility, using our proof-of-concept prototype, we have composted over one million pounds of organics, with simple hand-held tools, our own compost design and processing method.

Earth Appliance Organics aims to bring impactful solutions to the market that make local composting easier, more efficient, and affordable. Our EAOC Community-Composter (currently being field-tested) is perfect for a Community Garden, or a city block that wants to compost their own food scraps.

This in-vessel system securely contains all material and allows for year-round composting that quickly converts food scraps and leaves into valuable compost. As we work toward commercialization, we keep these values and goals in mind and hope to become part of your community real soon.
